The Carla Bley Band
Nominated for the "Best Jazz Arrangement" Grammy, Carla's arrangement of Thelonious Monk's "Misterioso" is an remarkable major work. Featuring Johnny Griffin's tenor sax solo, and the over-arching guitar of Hiram Bullock, this big band piece explodes out of the speakers.
Joe Jackson's arrangement of "'Round Midnight" was recorded first for what was to become producer Hal Willner's rocker and pop tribute to the music of Thelonious Monk. But Carla's piece sealed the deal with A&M.
This album was—in the historical, original sense—my masterpiece.
